iří Čelikovský stood at the forefront of the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union in the area of Schengen cooperation. Throughout his 25 year experience in the area of border policy, Jiří gathered a unique experience in this field. First, as deputy head of Border Police and later head of Schengen Unit at the Ministry of the Interior, he acquired in depth knowledge in both implementing border control as well as abolishing it. Jiří was at the core of drafting and implementing some of the most important pieces of European and national legislation related to Schengen cooperation and is recognized for his role during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2009. With the Ministry of the Interior, as head of a respective Schengen unit, Jiří has built a reputation for his deep knowledge of Schengen standards gained through years of participation in numerous Schengen evaluation missions. These standards are now comprised in Government-approved strategy known as National Schengen Plan, which Jiří supervises.
